Gene C. Utterback

Utterback, Gene C.
19 Jun 1939 - 2 Apr 2015

Gene was born in Omaha, Nebraska on June 19, 1939 to his parents, Curtis and Clarice Carlson Utterback. Together with his sister, Darlene, and his brother, Dave, he spent his childhood on an acreage at 93rd and “F” Streets. He went to Oakdale Grade School and then graduated from Westside High School in 1957. He attended the University of Omaha for two years, and in November of 1959 started work at Western Electric, where he was in the tool and die apprentice program.

On March 10, 1962, Gene was married to Arlene Enger at First Lutheran Church in Blair, Nebraska. Gene and Arlene raised three sons: Bradley, Michael and Jeffrey. When the boys were involved with Cub Scouts and in the high school band, Gene volunteered to help with those programs. He was a member of the German-American Society and held office on their board as trustee and as membership chairman for several years. He was also a member of the Bars (pronounced “Bears”) organization at the German-American Society. He worked as a tool and die maker for 30 years until his retirement from Lucent in December of 1989.

In 1985 Gene and Arlene and his brother, Dave, became owners of a Champion Auto Store until they sold it in June of 2000. Gene took pleasure in managing the store and working with the customers to help them solve their car problems. Gene enjoyed playing golf, and after retirement he sometimes played five times a week. Gene and Arlene enjoyed traveling, especially their trip to Australia, New Zealand and Costa Rico. They also liked traveling to Florida, Arizona, and Texas, as well as other places around the country.

Gene was preceded in death by his father, Curtis. He is survived by his wife, Arlene K. Utterback; sons: Bradley Utterback (Kathleen), Michael Utterback, and Jeffrey Utterback (Elsie); mother, Clarice Utterback; sister, Darlene Christian (Keith); brother, David Utterback; grandsons, Bradley and Anthony Utterback; great-grandson, Towyn; step-grandsons: Allen, Brenten, and Craig Chrans; other relatives and many friends.
