Donald Wayne Smetter

Donald Wayne Smetter, age 88, formerly of Lincoln, NE, died July 30, 2011 at Sunrise Country Manor in Milford, Nebraska. Donald was born the son of Joseph and Clara (Miller) Smetter on April 19, 1923 in Beaver Crossing Nebraska. He attended Beaver Crossing Nebraska schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1943, serving his country with the 764th Army Air Force Unit until the end of WWII in 1945. Donald served as an electrician and control tower operator in the European Theatre in France and Belgium. He joined Western Electric, later a division of AT&T, in Lincoln in 1946 as a quality control engineer. On July 20th, 1947, Donald and Nelda Runge were united in marriage in Lincoln. The couple made their home in Lincoln until 1959 when they moved to Gretna, Nebraska, following Western Electric’s move of its operations to Omaha, Nebraska. The couple lived in Gretna, Nebraska, until Donald retired from Western Electric in 1985 after 39 years. The couple then again made their home in Lincoln. Donald was active in his church, volunteering his time and talent whenever he could. He was an active volunteer and member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a member of American Legion Post #3. Donald was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved God, his family and his country.

Donald is survived by his daughter Barbara of Lincoln; his son David and daughter-in-law Suzanne Smetter, grandsons Joseph and Samuel Smetter of Sioux City, Iowa; sister-in-laws Mildred Hall and Sandra Runge of Lincoln; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Nelda; two sisters Ruth and Elna; and one brother Gerald.

Visitation: 2:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at Roper and Sons, 4300 'O' Street, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Service: 10:30 A.M., Wednesday (8-3-11) at St. Paul United Church of Christ, 1302 “F” Street, Lincoln, Nebraska 68508, with the Rev. James David officiating.

Family Gathering: Family will greet friends from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. and one hour prior to service time at the church.

Interment: Lincoln Memorial Park, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Memorials: To the St. Paul United Church of Christ or Tabitha Hospice.
