Name Released Of Man Found Dead.

FREMONT, Neb. (AP) — Police have released the name of an 88-year-old man whose badly decomposed body was found in his Fremont home.

Deputy Chief Jeff Elliott said that it's believed Raymond Madsen had been dead for about four months. Officers found the body Friday afternoon after the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services asked that officers check on him.

Neighbors say they hadn't seen Madsen for months. His daughter had been staying with him.

An autopsy was ordered, and Madsen's death was still being investigated.

Man, 88, Dead For Months.

Neighbors say Fremont, Neb., resident Raymond Madsen mostly kept to himself, but when no one saw the 88-year-old man for a few months, suspicions were raised and authorities were called.

Deputy Chief Jeff Elliott of the Fremont Police Department said officers discovered Madsen’s body Friday in his home at 1425 N. Maxwell Ave. He appears to have been dead for about four months, authorities said.

The results of an autopsy of the badly decomposed body are being reviewed, and a cause of death has not been determined.

“We have not categorized the death as either suspicious or not suspicious,” Elliott said. “We still have a lot of work to do.”

Madsen’s daughter, Kathy Madsen, 57, also lived at the house and police are talking to her about why the death was not reported sooner.

“We are looking into all aspects of the situation,” Elliott said. “The investigation will be turned over to the Dodge County Attorney’s Office.”

Veronica Hultgren and her husband, Darrell, have lived next door to the Madsen family for about 30 years. They decided to call authorities after becoming concerned about an infestation of bugs in the dilapidated house next door.

“They were private people who wouldn’t let you in their home,” Veronica Hultgren said. “But it was kind of apparent something was wrong.”

Madsen told neighbors he had retired from Western Electric in Omaha. He sold his one-story ranch home in 2000 but remained as a tenant, neighbors said.

Another neighbor said he and Raymond Madsen bonded over their interest in citizens band radios, but their conversations grew less and less frequent in recent years.

“He wasn’t very mobile anymore, but I used to see him on the porch getting air,” the neighbor said. “Then I didn’t see him at all. It was a very strange situation.”

Elliott said the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services asked that officers check on the elderly man. Court records show that Madsen’s wife, Eileen, died in April 2005.

Police Charge Daughter Of Man Found Dead In Home.

Fremont Police have arrested the daughter of an 88-year-old man whose badly decomposed body was found in his home.

Kathy Madsen, 57, was charged with concealing the death of another person and false reporting, both misdemeanors, Deputy Chief Jeff Elliott stated in a press release. Elliott said Madsen provided misleading information to officers when they arrived to check on Raymond Madsen.

Elliott said the investigate continues and additional charges are possible.

Police initially were called to check the welfare of Raymond Madsen, who lived in the 1400 block of N. Maxwell St., on July 7 by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

Officers were unable to contact anyone at the home and tried again several times the next day. They were finally able to make contact with Kathy Madsen at almost midnight July 8.

When officers checked the house, they found the badly decomposed body of Raymond Madsen lying in a bed in a mummified state. Fremont detectives and Douglas County Crime Scene investigators determined he had been deceased for at least four months.

Kathy Madsen had been living in the home during that time.

An autopsy was conducted by the Douglas County Coroner's Office. A preliminary report stated the cause of death could not be determined.

She was released from custody after posting a $2,000 cash bond. Her first court date is set for Aug. 9 in Dodge County Court.

Elliott encouraged people to call the police department if they have not seen or had contact with a neighbor for some time.

"We're sad to see a situation like this develop, and with the help of our citizens we hope to prevent something like this in the future," Elliott said.
